Spain Student Visa
Requirements

Every document, form, and financial proof you need to get your Spanish student visa approved — explained clearly by qualified immigration lawyers.

Spain Student Visa Requirements at a Glance

The Spanish student visa — formally the Type D long-stay student visa — requires applicants to satisfy a checklist of documentary, financial, and legal conditions before the consulate will approve an application. Understanding every requirement in advance is the single most effective way to avoid delays or refusals.

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months' validity beyond your intended stay
  • Completed and signed EX-00 visa application form
  • Proof of enrolment or conditional acceptance at a recognised Spanish institution
  • Evidence of sufficient financial means (approx. €600/month)
  • Private health insurance covering all medical costs in Spain
  • Criminal record certificate with Hague Apostille
  • Medical certificate confirming no contagious diseases
  • Proof of accommodation arranged in Spain
  • Sworn (official) Spanish translation of all non-Spanish documents
  • Consulate visa fee payment (approx. €60–€80)

⚠ Common Reasons for Refusal

Even a complete document set can lead to refusal if presented incorrectly. The most frequent causes of Spain student visa rejections are:

  • Insufficient financial evidence or funds held for less than 3 months
  • Missing or non-certified sworn translations
  • Apostille on criminal record certificate expired or missing
  • Health insurance policy with copayments or coverage gaps
  • Course not recognised by Spanish authorities
  • Applying too late — consulate slots fully booked

How Much Money Do You Need?

Financial sufficiency is one of the most scrutinised aspects of any Spain student visa application. The Spanish consulate wants to be confident you can support yourself without recourse to public funds during your studies.

Course Length Monthly Requirement Minimum Total to Show Recommended Buffer
6 months €600/month €3,600 €4,500+
9 months €600/month €5,400 €6,500+
12 months (full year) €600/month €7,200 €8,500+
2 years (Master's) €600/month €14,400 €16,000+
💡

Sponsorship is Accepted

You do not need to hold the funds in your own name. A parent or legal guardian can sponsor you — provided they supply a formal sponsorship letter, their own ID, evidence of their relationship to you, and 3–6 months of their bank statements showing the required funds.

The Most Misunderstood Requirements

These four requirements cause the most problems because they involve third-party processes, strict formatting rules, or long lead times. Allow extra time for each of them.

Criminal Record Certificate

Issued by your home country's police authority (for example, ACRO in the UK, NBI in the Philippines, FBI in the USA). Processing times vary from 1 to 6 weeks. The certificate must then be sent for apostilling — an additional step that can take 2–4 weeks via official channels.

Key rules:

  • Issued within 3–6 months of your application date
  • Apostille affixed by the correct competent authority
  • Sworn Spanish translation if document is in English or any other non-Spanish language
  • Do not laminate — apostille must remain visible and authentic

Sworn Spanish Translation

A sworn translation is a certified translation carried out by a translator officially recognised by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It carries the translator's stamp and a declaration of accuracy under oath. Without this, foreign-language documents are rejected outright.

Typically required for:

  • Criminal record certificate (if not in Spanish)
  • Bank statements (if not in Spanish)
  • Degree certificates / academic transcripts
  • Sponsorship letters from foreign parents
  • Medical certificate (if issued in English)

Health Insurance Policy

The Spanish consulate takes a strict view on health insurance. The policy must cover you for the entire duration of your stay, must provide 100% cover with no copayments, and must explicitly state it is valid for Spain. A general travel policy is not sufficient.

What consulates look for:

  • Full medical and hospitalisation cover in Spain
  • Repatriation cover in case of serious illness
  • No deductibles or excess payments
  • Policy documentation in Spanish or with sworn translation
  • Dates covering the full visa period

Course Eligibility

Not every course qualifies for a Spanish student visa. The course must be at a recognised institution, must be full-time (typically defined as 20 hours per week minimum), and must lead to a recognised qualification or be an official language course at an accredited academy.

Courses that qualify:

  • University degrees and Masters programmes (accredited)
  • Official language school certificates (DELE preparation)
  • Vocational training (FP) programmes
  • Research programmes at recognised institutes
  • Accredited professional development programmes

Start Early — Some Documents Take Months

The apostilled criminal record certificate alone can take 6–10 weeks if you include the processing time for the certificate itself, postage to the apostilling authority, and sworn translation. If you are applying in peak season (June–September), consulate appointments may also be fully booked 8–12 weeks in advance. Begin at least 3 months before your intended travel date.

Spain Student Visa Requirements — FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the Spain student visa document requirements.

The core Spain student visa requirements are: a valid passport (6+ months' remaining validity), completed EX-00 form, letter of acceptance from a recognised Spanish institution, proof of financial means (≈€600/month), private health insurance covering Spain, an apostilled criminal record certificate, medical certificate, proof of accommodation, and sworn Spanish translations of all foreign-language documents.
You need to demonstrate approximately €600 per month for the full duration of your course — so roughly €7,200 for a one-year programme. These funds can be in your personal bank account, a sponsor's account (with a formal sponsorship letter), or a combination of both. The funds should ideally have been in the account for at least 3 months.
Yes. Your criminal record certificate must carry a Hague Apostille from your home country's competent authority. It must also be recent (issued within 3–6 months of your appointment) and accompanied by a sworn Spanish translation if it is in English or any other language.
You need private health insurance with full coverage in Spain — no copayments, no deductibles, and no geographic exclusions. It must cover the full duration of your visa. Your university's student card is not sufficient. Providers such as Sanitas, Adeslas, or specialist expat insurers are widely accepted. We can help you source the right policy.
Any document in a language other than Spanish must be accompanied by an official sworn translation carried out by a translator certified by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Online or informal translations are not accepted. Our service includes sworn translations as standard — you don't need to arrange them separately.
Start at least 3 months before your intended travel date. Criminal record certificates, apostilles, and sworn translations each take several weeks. Add to this the time needed to secure a consulate appointment — which in peak months (June–September) can be fully booked 2–3 months in advance. Earlier is always safer.
