Passport Requirements
for Spain Student Visa

Your passport must meet specific validity and page requirements before the consulate will accept your application. Check these before you book your appointment.

What Your Passport Must Satisfy

The consulate checks these passport requirements at the appointment window. A failure on any one of them means your application cannot proceed that day.

📅

Valid for the Full Stay + 3 Months

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your course in Spain, plus at least three months beyond. For a 12-month course, your passport should be valid for at least 15 months from your travel date.

📄

At Least 2 Blank Pages

You need a minimum of two blank, unstamped pages — one for the visa sticker and one spare. A heavily used passport with no remaining pages will be rejected. Renew if yours is near full.

🔏

Issued Within the Last 10 Years

Standard passport validity. Most passports are issued with a 10-year validity period. If yours is older than 10 years, it will have expired. Check the expiry date on your passport's data page.

📋

Photocopy of the Data Page

Bring a clear photocopy of your passport's main data page — the page showing your photograph, name, date of birth, passport number, and expiry date. This copy is added to your application file.

🎫

No Physical Damage

Damaged passports — torn pages, water damage, illegible data pages — are not accepted. If your passport is damaged, renew it before applying. The consulate needs to be able to read all data clearly.

✍️

Bring the Original — Not a Copy

You must bring your original passport to the appointment. The officer will inspect it in person. Certified copies or scans are not accepted in place of the original document.

Renewing Your Passport Before Applying

If your passport is expiring soon or is almost full, renew before starting your visa application. Attempting to apply with an expiring passport is a common and avoidable mistake.

Passport Questions Answered

Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Spain plus at least three months beyond the end of your visa. For a 12-month course, your passport should ideally have at least 15 months of validity remaining from your intended travel date.
A minimum of two blank pages — one for the visa sticker and one spare. If your passport is nearly full, renew it before applying. A heavily stamped passport with insufficient blank pages will not be accepted.
You should not apply if your passport expires before or shortly after your course ends. Renew your passport before applying. The visa cannot be granted beyond the expiry date of your passport — applying with a near-expired passport could mean getting a shorter visa than your course requires.
You must bring your original passport to the consulate appointment. You also need a clear photocopy of the main data page. The consulate will hold your passport to affix the visa sticker and return it to you — usually within a few days to weeks depending on the consulate.
If you are a dual national and hold two valid passports, you may be able to travel on the second passport while the first is held by the consulate for visa processing. However, you should inform the consulate if you intend to do this. If you only have one passport, you will need to remain in your home country until it is returned. Processing times vary from a few days to several weeks depending on the consulate and time of year.
At minimum, you need a clear photocopy of the main data page — the page containing your photograph, full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and expiry date. Some consulates also request copies of pages showing previous Spanish or Schengen visas. Check your specific consulate's requirement list. Make the photocopy clear and full-size (A4 paper, not reduced).
All your documents — passport, EX-00 form, enrolment letter, financial proof, and health insurance — must show the same name. If there is a discrepancy (e.g. you use a middle name in some documents but not others, or you have recently changed your name), you may need to provide a supporting document such as a deed poll or marriage certificate explaining the difference. Name mismatches are a common reason for consulate queries.
A full passport is required for the Spain student visa. A national identity card is not sufficient for non-EU applicants applying for a long-stay visa type D. The visa sticker is affixed inside the passport, so a physical passport is mandatory. EU and EEA citizens do not need a Spanish student visa at all — only non-EU nationals require one.
You can renew your passport at any time before it expires — you do not need to wait until it is close to expiry. If your passport has fewer than 15 months of validity remaining or has fewer than two blank pages, renew it before starting your Spain student visa application. Standard renewal processing can take 4–10 weeks; expedited or urgent service is faster but more expensive. Factor this into your visa preparation timeline.
The consulate may review your passport's travel history as part of the application assessment. Previous Schengen visas, entries to Spain, and travel to other countries are all visible in your passport stamps. This is generally beneficial — it shows you have a compliant travel history. If your passport contains a previous visa refusal stamp from any Schengen country, be prepared to address this as part of your application.
Yes — a brand new passport with no stamps or travel history is perfectly acceptable. The consulate does not require you to have prior travel history to Spain or Europe. A new passport simply means there is plenty of space for the visa sticker and future stamps, which is actually an advantage. If you recently renewed your passport, bring both your old and new passports to the appointment — your old passport may contain relevant visa history the consulate wishes to review.
Report the loss or theft to the police immediately and obtain a police report. Then contact your national passport issuing authority to apply for an emergency or replacement passport. Once you have your new passport, you will need to restart or update your visa application. If you already have a consulate appointment booked, contact the consulate to explain the situation — they may be able to reschedule without penalty depending on the circumstances.
