What Is a Spain Student Visa Renewal?

The Spain student visa renewal — officially called the prorroga de estancia por estudios — is the process of extending your student authorisation for another academic year without leaving Spain and without returning to a Spanish consulate in your home country. It is one of the most significant advantages of the Spain student visa compared to other visa types: the entire renewal process is handled within Spain, at the local Oficina de Extranjería, by submitting a renewal application before your current authorisation expires.

Renewal is not automatic — you must actively apply each year, demonstrating continued enrolment, financial means, health insurance, and academic progress. Each renewal is assessed independently. If your circumstances have materially changed — for example, you have changed institution, changed course, or had significant attendance issues — you must disclose these and demonstrate continued eligibility.

Who Qualifies to Renew a Spain Student Visa?

You must meet all of the following conditions to qualify for a renewal. These are assessed at the time of your application — conditions that were met at initial application but have lapsed will cause the renewal to be refused.

1

Continued Enrolment at an Accredited Institution

You must be enrolled in and actively attending an accredited Spanish institution for the coming academic year. A new or renewed enrolment letter is required covering the next period of study.

2

Evidence of Academic Progress

You must demonstrate that you have been genuinely studying — typically through a transcript, attendance record, or letter from the institution confirming your academic standing and continuation.

3

Continued Financial Means

Bank statements showing sufficient funds to support yourself for the coming year — broadly the same threshold as the initial application (approximately €600–800/month, depending on the Oficina de Extranjería).

4

Valid Health Insurance Covering the Renewal Period

Your Spain student visa-compliant health insurance must be renewed and valid for the new academic year. An expired policy is a common and easily avoidable renewal refusal ground.

5

Current Empadronamiento

An up-to-date certificado de empadronamiento (municipal census registration) at your current Spanish address — typically issued within the last 3 months.

6

Application Submitted Before (or Shortly After) Expiry

Applications submitted within the 60 days before expiry, or up to 90 days after (though post-expiry applications risk penalties). Apply within the 60-day pre-expiry window for maximum security.
