How to Renew Your
Spain Student Visa

The complete step-by-step renewal process for the prorroga de estancia por estudios in 2026 — from booking your appointment to collecting your new TIE card.

Renewing Your Spain Student Visa — What You Need to Know

The Spain student visa renewal (prorroga de estancia por estudios) is simpler than the initial application — no apostilles, no sworn translations, no consulate visit. The entire process is handled within Spain at your local Oficina de Extranjería. However, it must be done correctly and on time. Applications submitted after your current authorisation has expired carry the risk of being treated as an irregular stay, which can have serious immigration consequences.

The renewal process has three core phases: document preparation, appointment booking and attendance, and waiting for the decision. Each phase has specific tasks and timings. Follow the steps below in order.

The Spain Student Visa Renewal Process — 6 Steps

1

Prepare Your Renewal Documents — Start 8 Weeks Before Expiry

Begin gathering your renewal documents at least 8 weeks before your current TIE card expires. The most time-sensitive items are your new enrolment letter (allow 5–10 days from your school) and your updated health insurance (allow up to 2 weeks if switching providers). You also need a fresh empadronamiento certificate — issued within the last 3 months — which you can request at your ayuntamiento.

📋 Your appointment must be booked before documents expire, so prepare everything together — don't wait for one item before starting on others.
2

Complete the EX-00 Renewal Application Form

Download the EX-00 form (Solicitud de Prórroga de Estancia por Estudios) from the official Spanish government or Oficina de Extranjería website. Complete it entirely in Spanish. Mark the purpose clearly as prorroga de estancia por estudios. Sign the form by hand — a digital or typed signature is not accepted.

✏️ The form must be completed in Spanish. Any English-language responses on the form may result in the application being rejected at the window.
3

Pay the Tasa 790-052 Processing Fee

Pay the renewal processing fee using the Tasa 790, code 052 at any Spanish bank. The fee is approximately €16–20. Request the Tasa 790 form from the bank or download and pre-fill it from the AEAT website. Pay in person at a branch — keep the stamped receipt, which is a required document at your appointment.

💶 Pay the fee before your appointment — you cannot pay at the Oficina de Extranjería itself.
4

Book Your Appointment Through CITA PREVIA

Book your renewal appointment through the CITA PREVIA system at sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. Select your province, then Extranjería, then the relevant renewal option. In major cities — Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia — book as early as possible, as appointments can be 3–6 weeks out. Book immediately once your document preparation is underway, not once everything is ready.

📅 Do not wait until your visa has nearly expired before booking — appointment availability is limited. Book the moment you start preparing.
5

Attend Your Oficina de Extranjería Appointment

Arrive 15 minutes early. Bring all original documents plus at least one photocopy of each. The officer will review your application, verify your documents, and take the copies. You will receive a resguardo (application receipt) which confirms your application has been submitted and serves as proof of your legal status during processing. Your passport and TIE card remain with you.

📄 Your resguardo is your proof of legal status while you wait. Keep it with you at all times during the processing period.
6

Wait for the Decision and Collect Your New TIE Card

Processing typically takes 1–3 months. You may receive a notification by post, email, or SMS depending on your province. Once approved, you will be notified to collect your new TIE card from the Oficina de Extranjería. Bring your current TIE card, passport, and resguardo. Check all details on the new TIE card — name, NIE, validity dates — before leaving.
