Health Insurance When You
Extend Your Student Stay

When you apply to extend your student authorisation, your health insurance is checked again. It must meet the same rules as before and cover the period you are applying for, with no gap. Talk to Spanish Health Insurance about your current policy or new cover.

What the Extension Application Checks

An extension (prórroga) must show that you still meet the requirements, and health insurance is one of them (Royal Decree 1155/2024, art. 55.3 and art. 35.i). Each extension lasts for the length of your course, up to one year (art. 55.5).

The filing window, how to apply and the documents you need are explained in our extension guide, with the extension requirements and how to apply.

Keeping Your Health Cover Continuous

Continuing your current policy

If your current policy still meets the criteria, check that its dates will cover the period you are applying for. Spanish Health Insurance can review your current cover with you. Your available policy duration and eligibility will be confirmed with your personalised quote.

Changing to new cover

If you need new cover, arrange it so that it starts by the time your current policy ends. A gap in cover can cause problems with your extension.

Your insurance documents

Your documents should show your name, policy dates covering the extension period, and full cover with no co-payments and no waiting periods, from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain.

If your authorisation covers your whole degree

A higher education authorisation can last for the official length of your studies (art. 55.1), so you may not extend every year. You must still keep meeting the requirements, including health insurance, throughout (art. 55.2).

If You Work While You Study

If you work under art. 57 of Royal Decree 1155/2024 and are registered with Social Security, that registration meets the insurance requirement (art. 57.5). Keep your private cover until your registration is confirmed.
