How Australians Apply for a Spain Student Visa
The process for Australians follows the standard Spain student visa steps — with country-specific documents for the criminal record and apostille.
Enrol in an Eligible Course in Spain
Select an accredited Spanish institution offering a course of 20+ hours per week for 90+ days. Obtain your official enrolment letter in Spanish, confirming your course dates, weekly hours, and cost.
Request Your Criminal Record Certificate
Apply for your national criminal record certificate from AFP National Police Certificate — order online at afp.gov.au; processing typically 2–4 weeks. Start this the same week you enrol — it is the longest lead-time document in the process.
Get the Apostille
Once your certificate arrives, send it immediately to DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) — typically 2–4 weeks for apostillisation. Allow the full stated processing time before planning your appointment.
Commission a Sworn Spanish Translation
Once apostilled, your criminal record certificate must be sworn-translated into Spanish by a certified translator. Most translators turn this around in 3–7 working days.
Gather All Other Documents
In parallel: obtain Spain student visa-compliant health insurance, a medical certificate (required for all applicants since 20 May 2025, regardless of course length), bank statements (3–6 months), proof of accommodation in Spain, and complete the EX-00 form in Spanish.
Book and Attend Your Consulate Appointment
Book your appointment at the Spanish consulate in Sydney. Attend with originals and copies of all documents. Pay the visa fee (approximately AUD 120–140). Your passport will be retained for processing.
Collect Your Visa and Travel to Spain
Once notified (typically 3–5 weeks (Sydney consulate is generally efficient) after appointment), collect your passport with the visa sticker. Check all details. Book your flights. Within 30 days of arriving in Spain, complete empadronamiento and your TIE card appointment.
Health Insurance for Your Spain Student Visa from Australia
Private health insurance is one of the documents in your visa file, and it has to meet Spain's rules, not just cover you while you travel: Australian Medicare and travel insurance policies are not accepted. The insurer must be authorised to operate in Spain, and the policy must give full cover comparable to the Spanish public system, with no co-payments, no waiting periods and no reimbursement-only model, valid for your whole stay.
Arrange cover before you leave Australia
You do not need to be in Spain to get insured. You can request a quote and apply online from home, in the same weeks you are gathering your criminal record certificate and enrolment letter. Once your application is accepted and the premium is paid, the insurance certificate for your visa file is issued, so leave enough time for that before your consulate appointment.

Match the policy dates to your course and visa
Cover must be in force for the whole of your stay in Spain, so set the start date for your arrival and make sure the policy runs to the end of your course. Your available policy duration and eligibility will be confirmed with your personalised quote.
The document for your visa file
The consulate needs the insurance certificate showing who is insured, the cover and the policy dates. Check your consulate's current checklist for exactly how it wants the insurance evidence presented, and bring the certificate with the rest of your originals and copies.
Partners and children
If a partner or children are coming with you, the student policy terms do not automatically apply to them. Each family member must have suitable cover in their own name that meets the visa criteria, and cover and eligibility are assessed for each person. See health insurance for your family.
