Health Insurance for Your Family
on a Spain Student Visa
If your partner or children are coming to Spain with you, each of you needs health insurance that meets the visa rules. Cover and eligibility are assessed for each person, so the student, a partner and each child may need different cover. Request cover for your family in one enquiry.
Health Cover for Each Person in Your Family
Spain checks each applicant's insurance on its own. Spanish Health Insurance reviews the circumstances of each person. Available cover is subject to eligibility, any required underwriting and confirmation in the quote and policy documents.
The student
Student health insurance is designed for people studying in Spain, and it has its own eligibility rules, including age. If you are the student, your quote confirms which cover fits your age, course and stay.
Your partner
A spouse, registered partner or stable partner must have suitable cover in their own name that meets the visa criteria. It is not automatically the same product as the student's: your partner's age and situation are assessed on their own.
Your children
Each child must have suitable cover in their own name for the whole stay, including a partner's children who come with you. Children are assessed individually too. Provide each child's date of birth when requesting your family quote.
One enquiry for the household
You can request cover for everyone at once. Listing several people in one enquiry does not mean they all qualify for the same product. Available cover and eligibility are confirmed for each person with your personalised quote.
What Every Family Member's Policy Must Meet
The same health insurance rules apply to the student and to each family member (Royal Decree 1155/2024, arts. 35.i and 56, and the Ministry's criteria of 7 August 2025).
- An insurer authorised to operate in Spain
- Full cover, comparable to the Spanish public health system's common basic services
- No co-payments, not reimbursement-only, and no waiting periods
- If the policy caps its cover at a fixed amount, that cap must be at least €30,000
- In force for the whole period of each person's authorisation
Some consulates list extra details in their own checklists, so check your consulate's checklist for each applicant. See what the insurance requirement covers and what “no co-payments” means in practice.
Which Families Can Join a Student in Spain
Family members can accompany only students in higher education (university degrees, official master's and PhD programmes, the Máster de Formación Profesional) or specialised health training. They include a spouse, a registered partner or a proven stable partner, unmarried children under 18 of the student or their partner, and adult children who need specific support because of disability or illness (Royal Decree 1155/2024, art. 56).
The family visa rules, documents and money requirements are explained in our family visa guide, with details for partners, children and the documents each family member needs.
