Over 35 in Spain
There is no maximum age for a Spain student visa, and your health insurance has to meet the same rules as anyone else's. What changes over 35 is which cover you can take out. Your age, course and stay are reviewed when you make your enquiry.
Is There an Age Limit for the Student Visa?
No. Royal Decree 1155/2024 (art. 35.f) sets minimum ages only: over 17 for higher education and over 18 for some other study routes. There is no upper limit.

Why Your Age Matters for Health Insurance
Student policies have age limits
Some student health insurance policies can only be taken out up to a set age, so a student policy may not be available to you over 35.
Over 35: your circumstances are reviewed
Spanish Health Insurance reviews your circumstances to find cover that meets the same visa criteria. Available cover is subject to eligibility, any required underwriting and confirmation in the quote and policy documents.
What Your Policy Must Meet at Any Age
The same rules apply whatever your age (Royal Decree 1155/2024, art. 35.i, and the Ministry's criteria of 7 August 2025).
- An insurer authorised to operate in Spain
- Full cover, comparable to the Spanish public health system's common basic services
- No co-payments, not reimbursement-only, and no waiting periods
- If the policy caps its cover at a fixed amount, that cap must be at least €30,000
- Valid for your whole stay
