Empadronamiento for
Spain Student Visa Holders

Registering your address in Spain — empadronamiento — is the very first administrative step after you arrive. It unlocks everything else: your TIE appointment, healthcare, and official Spanish residency status.

What Is Empadronamiento and Why Does It Matter?

Empadronamiento is the process of registering your home address on Spain's municipal census — the padrón municipal. Every person living in Spain — Spanish citizens and foreign residents alike — is legally required to be empadronado at their address. For Spain student visa holders, it is the foundation of your administrative life in Spain. Without it, you cannot complete your TIE card application, register with a doctor, or access local public services.

What Empadronamiento Unlocks for Spain Student Visa Holders

🪪

TIE Card Application

Your empadronamiento certificate is a required document at your TIE card appointment. You cannot get your TIE without it.

🏥

GP / Healthcare Registration

Registering with a local doctor (médico de cabecera) for public healthcare requires your empadronamiento certificate and NIE.

🏦

Bank Account Opening

Some Spanish banks accept the empadronamiento certificate as proof of address when opening an account before your TIE card is issued.

📋

Proof of Address

The certificado de empadronamiento is the official Spanish proof of address accepted for formal contracts, school enrolment confirmation, and administrative procedures.

🎓

School / University Requirements

Some Spanish schools and universities request empadronamiento confirmation as part of your official student record on arrival.

🔄

Visa Renewal

When renewing your student authorisation, your current empadronamiento certificate is typically required as proof of continued residence in Spain.

What to Bring to Your Empadronamiento Appointment

Requirements vary slightly between municipalities, but these documents are required in all cases. Have originals and photocopies of everything.

1

Original Passport with Spain Student Visa

Your passport with the valid student visa sticker. The ayuntamiento will verify your legal status in Spain. Bring a photocopy of the data page and the visa page.

2

Proof of Your Spanish Address

Evidence that you live at the address you are registering. This can be your signed rental contract (contrato de arrendamiento), a confirmation letter from your student residence, a host declaration letter (autorización del propietario), or a utility bill in the owner's name if they provide a supporting letter.

3

Completed Hoja de Inscripción Form

The padrón registration form (hoja de inscripción en el padrón municipal). This is available at the ayuntamiento on arrival or downloadable from the town hall's website. Fill it in with your full name, date of birth, nationality, and Spanish address.

Shared accommodation: If you are renting a room in a shared flat, your landlord may need to provide an autorización del propietario — a signed letter confirming permission for you to register at the property. Ask your landlord for this before your appointment.

How to Complete Empadronamiento in Spain

1

Find Your Local Ayuntamiento

Identify the ayuntamiento (town hall) responsible for the municipality where your accommodation is located. In large cities, there may be multiple district offices. Look for the Oficina de Padrón Municipal or Oficina de Atención al Ciudadano at your city's official website.

2

Book an Appointment (If Required)

Major cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville require a prior appointment (cita previa) for empadronamiento. Book through your city hall's website. Smaller towns often accept walk-ins — check your specific municipality's procedure.

3

Attend with All Documents

Go in person — empadronamiento cannot be done online in most municipalities. Present your passport with student visa, your accommodation proof, and the completed registration form. The staff member will process your registration on the spot.

4

Request Your Certificado de Empadronamiento

After registering, request your certificado de empadronamiento — the official certificate proving your registration. Some municipalities issue it immediately. Others issue it within a few days. Request it in person at the appointment or through the online municipal portal if available. You will need this certificate for your TIE appointment.

5

Use the Certificate for Your TIE Appointment

Take your certificado de empadronamiento to your TIE card appointment at the Oficina de Extranjería. The certificate must typically be no more than 3 months old. If your TIE appointment is scheduled weeks after you register, your empadronamiento certificate will still be valid.

Empadronamiento Questions Answered

Empadronamiento is registering your residential address on Spain's municipal census. It is legally required for all residents. As a student visa holder, you need it to apply for your TIE card, register with a doctor, access local services, and as official proof of your Spanish address.
At your local ayuntamiento (town hall) — the one responsible for the area where your accommodation is located. In large cities, book an appointment through the city hall's website first. In smaller towns, you can often walk in.
Your passport with valid student visa, proof of your Spanish address (rental contract, student residence confirmation, or landlord letter), and the completed hoja de inscripción form. Requirements vary slightly between municipalities.
No — they are different. Empadronamiento is registering your address at the town hall (ayuntamiento). The TIE card is your residency ID issued by the foreigners' office (Oficina de Extranjería). You must complete empadronamiento first because the TIE appointment requires your empadronamiento certificate as a document.
The appointment itself takes 15–30 minutes. Most municipalities issue the certificado de empadronamiento on the same day or within a few days. Request it immediately on registering if you need it quickly for your TIE appointment.
