You Did It — Now What?

Your Spain Student Visa
Is Approved — Next Steps

Visa approved, passport back in your hands. Here is everything to check, confirm, and do — before you travel and in your first 30 days in Spain.

Check Your Visa Sticker Before You Leave the Consulate

The moment you collect your passport, check every detail on the visa sticker while you are still at the consulate. Errors are rare but they do happen — and they are much easier to fix before you walk out the door than after.

What to Verify on Your Visa Sticker

  • Your full name — must match your passport exactly, including all middle names if present
  • Visa type — must show Type D (national long-stay visa, not a Schengen short-stay type C)
  • Validity dates — the from/until dates should cover your intended period of study in Spain
  • Number of entries — should read MULT (multiple entry) allowing you to travel in and out of Spain
  • Duration of stay — the number of days or the period indicated should align with your course length
  • Country — should show ESPAÑA or E as the territory of validity

After Approval — Questions Answered

Check all details on the visa sticker immediately. Then book travel, confirm accommodation, and prepare copies of key documents. Within 30 days of arriving in Spain, complete your empadronamiento (address registration) and attend your TIE card appointment.
Check your name (matches passport exactly), visa type (must be D), validity dates (cover your course period), number of entries (MULT for multiple), and the territory (España/E). If anything is wrong, flag it to the consulate before leaving.
Your visa sticker shows validity dates. You must make your first entry into Spain within the validity window — typically within 90 days of the visa start date. Check the specific dates on your sticker and travel accordingly.
Yes — two essential steps: (1) empadronamiento (register your address at the town hall), and (2) your TIE card appointment at the Oficina de Extranjería. Both must be completed within 30 days of arrival.
Yes — the tipo D visa with MULT designation allows you to travel within the Schengen Area and return to Spain. Once your TIE card is issued, it also functions as a travel document for Schengen travel. Just ensure absences do not affect your course attendance requirements.
