Spain Student Visa Renewal Documents Checklist: Everything You Need

Get your renewal documents right the first time and your extranjería appointment will be smooth. Here is the complete checklist with format notes for each item.

Applying for your Spain student visa renewal (prórroga) at the extranjería is significantly simpler than the initial consulate application — but it is still an administrative process with specific document requirements where missing or improperly formatted documents can result in delays or complications. This guide gives you the complete documents checklist for a standard student visa renewal, with specific notes on format, validity periods, and what to do if a particular document is unavailable. Use this checklist as your preparation tool starting 60 days before your visa expiry.

Core Documents Required: The Standard Checklist

These documents are required by virtually all extranjería offices for a student visa renewal (prórroga de estancia por estudios):

1. Form EX-00 (Solicitud de Autorización de Estancia por Estudios)

The same EX-00 form used for your initial visa application — download the current version from extranjeria.gob.es, not from a cached or older source. Complete all sections in full, sign by hand in ink. Prepare two copies.

2. Valid Passport

Original + 1 photocopy of the main biographic page plus the page showing your current Spanish visa stamp. Your passport must be valid for the entire renewal period requested. If your passport expires during the next academic year, renew your passport before applying for the visa renewal.

3. Current TIE Card (Expiring)

Original + 1 photocopy of both sides. The TIE card you are renewing.

4. Updated Enrollment Certificate

Must be issued by your Spanish educational institution specifically for the next academic year. Must include: your full name, programme name, start and end dates, and minimum weekly teaching hours. Issue date must be within 3 months of your application date. Older certificates will be rejected.

5. Financial Evidence

Last 3 months of bank statements (all pages) showing your name, account number, and transaction history. The balance must demonstrate sufficient funds — approximately €7,000–€10,000 for a full year, or evidence of a continuing scholarship or sponsorship.

6. Valid Health Insurance Certificate

Certificate from your private health insurance provider confirming coverage for the full next academic year. The coverage must be continuous — no gaps. If your current policy expires before the renewal period ends, obtain the new policy before applying and provide both certificates to show continuity.

7. Tasa 790 Código 052 Payment Receipt

The application fee receipt — print and bring the payment confirmation. The tasa can now be paid online at sede.administraciones.gob.es or at a designated Spanish bank. Do not pay the tasa until your appointment is confirmed — payment must be recent.

8. Empadronamiento Certificate

A current volante de empadronamiento from your local ayuntamiento — must be dated within 3 months of your application. Request a fresh one specifically for this application.

Additional Documents Some Extranjería Offices Request

Not all extranjería offices in Spain require the following, but having them prepared prevents delays if asked:

  • Academic transcript (historial académico) — shows your enrolled modules and grades or progress markers. Issued by your university's academic secretariat. Some extranjería offices, particularly in Madrid and Barcelona, are now routinely requesting this to verify genuine academic progress.
  • Módulos superados certificate — for FP (Formación Profesional) students, a certificate from the centre confirming the modules completed.
  • Proof of course fee payment for next year — receipt from your institution confirming fees paid or a payment plan in place.
  • Declaration from your supervisor (for PhD students) — confirming continued enrollment and progress toward the thesis.

Health Insurance: What Format Is Required

The health insurance certificate for renewal must be in Spanish or with a Spanish translation. It must state:

  • The policyholder's full name as it appears on the passport
  • Policy validity dates — must cover the full requested renewal period
  • Coverage territory: must explicitly confirm Spain as a covered territory
  • Coverage type: should include both in-patient and out-patient medical care in Spain
  • Insurer's name, address, and policy number

A web-based insurance certificate downloaded from the insurer's app or portal is generally accepted if it is on official insurer letterhead with a policy number. A generic 'insurance summary' without policy details is not sufficient.

Financial Evidence: What Format Is Acceptable

Personal Bank Statements

Last 3 months of statements from your primary account showing all transactions and a running balance. Must be printed on bank letterhead or be a certified PDF — not a screenshot or an email summary. If your bank only provides online statements, print the official PDF version and ensure it shows the bank's logo, account holder's full name, account number, and date range.

Scholarship Letter

If your scholarship continues into the next year, provide a letter from the awarding body specifically confirming the scholarship continues, the monthly amount, and the academic year it covers.

Sponsorship Letter

If a parent or relative sponsors you, their letter should be dated within 3 months of your application, signed, and accompanied by their 3 months of bank statements.

Documents You Do NOT Typically Need for Renewal

Unlike the initial consulate application, for a standard renewal at the extranjería you typically do not need:

  • Criminal record certificate — not required for renewals in most cases (unless you have spent extended time abroad)
  • Medical certificate — not required for renewals
  • Passport photographs — not typically required for renewals (the TIE card uses biometric data already on file)
  • Apostilles or sworn translations — your existing documents are already in the system; renewal documents (enrollment, bank statements) issued in Spanish or English are generally acceptable without translation at most extranjería offices
This is a key practical difference from the initial application — renewals are generally less expensive and less administratively burdensome. The main costs are the tasa fee, updated health insurance, and the enrollment certificate fee if your institution charges one.

Organising Your Documents for the Appointment

Present your documents in an orderly, clearly labelled set. A loose pile of papers creates a poor impression and slows the officer down. Use a folder with dividers or labelled plastic sleeves. The order recommended:

  1. EX-00 form (signed)
  2. Tasa payment receipt
  3. Passport (original + copy)
  4. TIE card (original + copy)
  5. Empadronamiento certificate
  6. Enrollment certificate
  7. Health insurance certificate
  8. Bank statements / financial evidence

Bring one complete photocopy set of everything in the same order, in addition to originals.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your enrollment certificate is issued in Spanish (which is standard for Spanish institutions), no translation is needed. If your institution issues documents in Catalan, Basque, or Galician, a Spanish translation may be required — check with the extranjería. Enrollment certificates from Spanish institutions are almost always issued in Spanish.
The extranjería typically requires bank statements from the last 3 months. The most recent statement should be dated as close to your application date as possible — ideally within 30 days. If there has been a significant change in your balance in the month before application (large withdrawal or deposit), be prepared to explain it.
Provide the current policy certificate along with the renewal confirmation or upcoming policy renewal letter. The key is demonstrating that coverage will be continuous without a gap. If there is any doubt, purchase the next year's policy early so you can show an overlapping or seamlessly renewing policy.
Yes — if your enrollment certificate is more than 3 months old at the time of your application, it will likely be rejected. Request a new, current certificate from your institution specifically for this renewal application. Most institutions can issue these within a few days on request.
Bring originals of key documents (passport, TIE card) and original versions of certificates (enrollment, health insurance, bank statements). For the EX-00 form and tasa receipt, originals (printed versions) plus a copy are sufficient. The extranjería officer will indicate which originals are retained and which are returned.
Report the loss to the Policía Nacional and obtain a denuncia (police report). Apply for a replacement TIE card at the extranjería. It is difficult to proceed with a renewal without your current TIE — the extranjería needs to see the card that is expiring. Report the loss immediately and seek urgent guidance from the extranjería or an immigration specialist.
Yes — additional documents that support your application are generally welcome. A letter from your academic supervisor, scholarship award letter, or evidence of academic achievements can strengthen your file. There is no list of prohibited supplementary documents. Organise any extras in a clearly labelled supplementary section at the back of your document bundle.
